Business Students Launch Food Sustainability Project in Partnership with FareShare

The business department at OSFC is proud to announce the launch of an innovative new student-led initiative, in partnership with FareShare, the UK’s leading organisation dedicated to tackling food waste and food insecurity. Officially launched on Tuesday 21 April, the project aims to address the growing challenges of surplus food waste and rising food costs within the local community.

Working closely with FareShare, students have developed a distribution model that rescues surplus fruit and vegetables and makes them available to families at significantly reduced prices. The initiative helps prevent high-quality food from going to waste while ensuring households can access fresh, nutritious produce at a more affordable cost.

Business Studies Teacher and Project Co-ordinator, Kam Ahmed, highlighted the dual impact of the project, stating:

We want to support our students in the current climate while also creating opportunities for them to develop and build key employability and interpersonal skills. This project allows them to gain real-world experience while making a genuine difference in the community.

The initiative has been designed to provide students with hands-on business experience, covering areas such as supply chain management, planning, pricing strategies, teamwork, and community engagement. It reflects the business department’s commitment to combining practical learning with social responsibility.

Families will be able to access fresh fruit and vegetables at reduced prices every Tuesday with further details to be shared locally.
This collaboration marks a significant step in empowering students to apply business principles in meaningful ways, demonstrating how innovation and social impact can work together to benefit both individuals and the wider community.

One customer remarked:

This is a wonderful service, providing lots of fresh fruit and vegetables at good value, you really can’t complain! The students are doing great work, providing a positive service to the community, we’ll certainly be back for more!
