Author William Hussey visits OSFC
On Thursday 17th October OSFC welcomed author William Hussey to speak with students, leading a lecture and bespoke workshops. William has written over a dozen novels, from thrillers for Young Adults to gripping whodunnits for adult readers.
Our A Level English Literature students alongside students from Hathershaw College and Oasis Academy Leesbrook attended a fun and educational exploration of the Gothic genre. From its origins and its place in literature to core texts such as Dracula and its themes. After an overview of the genre, complete with a thrilling illustrated presentation, pupils participated in the Dracula vs Van Helsing Quiz.
AS Level English Language students attended a workshop with William, discussing the journey of becoming a writer and the writing process. Following a few tips from William, pupils came up with their own idea for a story, which they then developed into a narrative plot, driven by a compelling main character. At the end of the workshop the class had collaborated on a plan for a full story, and were ready to start writing!
English Tutor, Philippa Gell said of the visit;
“It was interesting to look at the history of horror going back to before the spoken word. William was an engaging speaker who really drew out some interest and excellent questions from the OSFC and school students”
Feedback from OSFC students about the event was also really positive:
Hana Delal, Book Club Xtra;
“The event itself was a really interesting experience from learning about the history of the horror genre to the interactive quiz about Dracula near the end. I really look forward to reading some of William Hussey’s books in the near future.”
Raisa Aman, Book Club Xtra;
"I liked the talk, because I was unaware the Author was into Horror and that he'd talk about it. I have learnt things like the original stories of Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel. It's interesting to know how Disney has changed original horror stories into sweet Fairy Tales. A lot of the Dracula facts have convinced me to read the book. Now I want to read more horror, a genre I don't have much association with. Considering I haven't read his books, I really enjoyed this talk!"
