Amnesty - Cosy & Warm Appeal
This Autumn, our Amnesty Group has been working tirelessly to raise money to provide as many heated throws as possible in the Oldham community to elderly people who are living in poverty. Our students were passionate about the brutal impact that energy prices rocketing this year has had on elderly people. It is unspeakable that elderly people are faced with the choice of “heat or eat”.
The group hosted a bake sale in college in November where cakes and treats were baked and donated by teachers, college staff and students. Students also raised money through a justgiving site.
A total of £1047 was raised, which they used to buy heated throws at a discounted rate from Cosy Home at a cost of £1020. Students purchased 20 throws and then used the remaining money to buy 20 packets of biscuits for the elderly people to enjoy. The blankets will be distributed via a local Oldham charity, Breaking the Waves, who have identified through their food bank which local elderly residents are living in poverty and struggling to keep warm this winter. The blankets are a cost effective means of heating the person, rather than the room at 3p per hour.
Jen Russell and Laura Siddall, Law Tutors and Amnesty Group Leads said; "We are so proud of the students for their dedication to raising these funds for such a worthy cause!”
The students in our Amnesty Group are proud to be part of this initiative. Human rights provide a common language of mutual respect that has a vital role in drawing us together and building a stronger community in our College.
