Case study
Amy intends to begin a modern apprenticeship at BAE
I mainly chose to study French at OSFC as it is one of the only colleges in the Greater Manchester area that runs the course. My French teacher has always been so supportive not only with French studies but in a pastoral sense too.
French (A Level)
Assessment- Year 1 & 2
100% Exam - Exam board
AQA - Specific entry requirements
Grade 6 in GCSE French.
What Will You Learn?
If you have studied French at GCSE and enjoyed speaking the language, you are in a very good position to
study French A Level. Here at OSFC you will learn more about the culture of France and French speaking countries through the study of film, books and contemporary history.
The core of the course is speaking the language and getting to grips with the grammar in its written form. Your listening skills will also be developed so that your access to and confidence in the language matures quickly.
Classes are not conducted completely in French to begin with, but as the time progresses your level of understanding of grammar and vocabulary will encourage your fluency.
Modules
In your first year, topics studied will include technological innovations, family life, cinema and music, all looked at from a young French speaking person’s perspective.
In the second year, themes will include politics, crime and punishment and immigration and their impact on French speaking societies across the globe.
Special Features
- You will have support from the French Assistante who will tutor your speaking skills in 1-1 or paired practice sessions.
- We run many trips to universities around the north west, and enter (and often win) writing competitions.
- Guest speakers and ex students frequently visit the college to speak to and inspire our students.
Where Will This Lead?
A qualification in a foreign language is an excellent asset for any career or university pathway. Increasingly, in our global society, employers and educational institutions are very keen to recruit those with an international aspect to their CV.
Previous students have gone on to study languages at universities across the world including Russell Group institutions. Many have chosen to stay within the North West, where there are many excellent language departments. Linguists from OSFC have gone on to work in many sectors including the chemical industry, the Air Force, law, teaching, marketing, the Civil Service and in the media.
